This graphite drawing on off-white wove paper is a 20th-century illustrative interpretation of Martin Schongauer’s 15th-century engraving, The Eagle of Saint John. The composition depicts the eagle with outspread wings and its neck curved back toward its breast, its talons gripping a vertical decorative element resembling a twisted rope. To the right of the central figure, the word Matador is rendered in a prominent Gothic or Old English script. The piece is executed in a folk-art style with bold, textured shading and heavy graphite application. No signature or date is visible on the front of the work.
