Attributed to James McNeill Whistler (American, 1834–1903), pen and ink on toned paper. This architectural study depicts a complex arrangement of building facades with arched niches and various structural elements in a rapid, expressive style. The work is unsigned. The paper is a toned sheet with no watermarks or collection marks visible. The style and execution are consistent with the architectural sketches of the late 19th-century etching revival, closely resembling the work of Whistler and his contemporaries such as Ernest David Roth.
