BID PER WHAT YOU SEE IN THE PHOTO, NOT THE AI GENERATED TITLES AND DESCRIPTIONS! 1940 Play Ball Joe DiMaggio Baseball Card No. 1

This is a 1940 Play Ball baseball card featuring Hall of Famer Joe DiMaggio, designated as card number 1 in the set. The card was manufactured by Gum, Inc. of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The front displays a black and white photographic image of DiMaggio in a batting follow-through pose. A decorative border on the right side contains a vertical nameplate and a graphic of a 1939 pennant. The reverse features a biographical summary of the player, referred to as the Yankee Clipper, highlighting his 1939 season performance and the World Series against the Cincinnati Reds. The card is currently housed in a vintage-style clear plastic four-screw holder.

Visible markings on the front include the text 1939 PENNANT and JOE Di MAGGIO. The reverse includes the number 1, the name JOSEPH PAUL DiMAGGIO, Jr., the PLAY BALL brand name, and the copyright line © 1940, GUM, INC., Phila., Pa. along with PRINTED IN U.S.A. in the lower right corner.

Condition report:

The card is in poor to fair condition. The centering is significantly shifted toward the top and left edges on the front. All four corners are heavily rounded with significant wear. The edges show noticeable chipping and several small tears, particularly along the top and right margins of the front. The surfaces on both sides exhibit age-related foxing, staining, and toning. A vertical crease or surface crack is visible on the right side of the front running through the image area. There is substantial paper loss on the reverse side along the right-hand edge. Potential bidders should be aware that the four-screw holder may apply uneven pressure to the card\'s surface.
