This limited edition offset lithograph, titled On The Way To The Stars, is a work by aviation artist William J. Reynolds, dated 1981. The print depicts the historic November 15, 1960, flight of the North American X-15 (serial number 66671) piloted by Scott Crossfield, shown at the moment of engine ignition shortly after being released from its B-52 carrier aircraft. The print is pencil numbered 190/1000 and is hand-signed by the artist, William J. Reynolds, in the lower right margin. It also features a bold hand-signed signature by pilot Scott Crossfield in ink in the lower right area of the image, and a personalized hand-written inscription in the lower left that reads, To Mary S. Funk An historic aviator in her own right Scott Crossfield. Mary S. Funk, commonly known as Wally Funk, was a member of the Mercury 13 and a pioneering female aviator. The work includes a printed artist signature and date, REYNOLDS 1981, within the image and a copyright mark in the lower right margin. It is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity hand-signed by the artist, which provides biographical details regarding his service as a fighter pilot in the US Army Air Corps during World War II and his career as an aerospace artist.
