An original engraved preferred stock certificate for the Northern Pacific Railroad Company, issued October 11, 1886. This certificate, number X12820, represents ten shares at a par value of one hundred dollars each. Printed by the American Bank Note Co., New York, the document features an intricate blue ornamental border and a large blue PREFERRED STOCK underprint. The face of the certificate is decorated with two detailed vignettes: a central scene depicting a steam locomotive with a passenger train in a rural landscape, and a bottom center circular portrait of a bearded man, likely company executive Frederick Billings. Condition report:
The certificate is in used condition with signs of heavy handling consistent with its historical use. There are prominent vertical and horizontal fold lines with associated creasing and several minor tears. The paper shows overall toning and yellowing due to age. The left edge is irregular, indicating where it was detached from the original stock ledger book, and a portion of the original stub remains attached. The document features various cancellation marks, including a purple ink stamp and multiple punch holes in diamond, circular, and star shapes. Small chips and tears are present along the edges.
