Golden & Silver Age Comic & Collectibles Auction
Lot 17:
Description
A pair of vintage American pulp science fiction magazines, ‘Astounding Science-Fiction,’ published by Street & Smith. The first magazine, dated April 1940 (Vol. 25, No. 2), features “FINAL BLACKOUT” by L. Ron Hubbard. Its cover art depicts a desolate, war-torn landscape with futuristic structures. The reverse advertises the “U.S. ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION OFF FOR YEAR’S SURVEY” and “CAMELS” cigarettes. The second magazine, dated May 1940, features “SPACE GUARDS” by Phil Nowlan, with cover art illustrating a sleek, rocket-like spacecraft over a mechanical landscape. The reverse features an advertisement for “Chesterfield THE CIGARETTE OF THE HOUR.” Both magazines are constructed from paper, characteristic of the early 20th-century pulp era, and were originally priced at 20 cents.
Condition report:
Fair to good condition consistent with age and material. Both magazines exhibit visible wear including creasing, minor edge chipping, and abrasion to the spines. The paper throughout shows discoloration and toning typical of 80-year-old pulp periodicals.
