A pair of vintage ‘Startling Stories’ pulp science fiction magazines. The November 1939 issue features a vibrant red and blue rocket, marching soldiers, and elephants on an alien landscape, with visible story titles including ‘Ark of Space,’ ‘The Fortress of Utopia by Jack Williamson,’ and ‘A Martian Odyssey by Stanley G. Weinbaum.’ The July 1939 issue depicts a large yellow, tentacled creature menacing a city, with ‘From Eternity by Manly Wade Wellman’ noted. Both covers are marked ’15¢’ and ‘A THRILLING PUBLICATION.’ Handwritten spine markings read “S.S. NOV. 39” and “S.S. JULY 39.” The reverse sides of both magazines feature full-page color advertisements for ‘LUCKY STRIKE CIGARETTES,’ showing men inspecting tobacco crops.
