Lot 285:
Description
A professionally graded copy of Mad #9, published by E.C. Comics in February-March 1954, encapsulated in a clear plastic CGC Universal Grade slab with a rating of 5.5 and “OFF-WHITE TO WHITE Pages.” The comic features a Western-themed parody cover illustration by Harvey Kurtzman, dominated by bold yellow “MAD” lettering against a blue sky. Additional titles include “HUMOR IN A JUGULAR VEIN” on the left and “TALES CALCULATED TO DRIVE YOU.” A prominent speech bubble on the cover reads: “THE BAD ONES ARE COMING, MARSHALL… BUT AS LONG AS I HOLD YOU, I AM NOT AFRAID, FOR I KNOW YOU ARE NOT AFRAID!”, indicative of the publication’s satirical content. The cover bears a signature “H. Kurtz” at the bottom left. The CGC label confirms Harvey Kurtzman for story and cover, with additional art contributions by Wally Wood, John Severin, Bill Elder, and Jack Davis. The issue includes parodies of “Little Orphan Annie,” “The Raven,” and “High Noon.”
