Golden & Silver Age Comic & Collectibles Auction
Lot 29:
Description
This lot comprises two vintage American pulp magazines from “Street & Smith’s Unknown Fantasy Fiction” series, printed on paper. The May 1940 issue features a colorful cover depicting a blue dragon, a fiery figure, and a small boat, advertising “THE ROARING TRUMPET” by L. Sprague de Camp and Fletcher Pratt. The June 1940 issue, with cover art signed “EDO. CARTIER,” portrays a robed figure with a yellow, elongated face surrounded by disembodied heads, highlighting the story “But without HORNS” by Norvell W. Page. Both issues were originally priced at 20 cents. Their reverse sides display full-page cigarette advertisements: Lucky Strike for the May issue, and Camel for the June issue, the latter featuring “Bob Swanson picks his racing cars for speed – his cigarettes for slow-burning.”
Condition report:
Good vintage condition. Covers remain largely intact with clear text and imagery. Visible wear along spines and edges, some minor creasing, and general discoloration consistent with age and handling. Interiors appear complete.
