This engraving on paper is plate number 43 from the celebrated early 19th-century French satirical fashion series, Le Bon Genre, published by Pierre de la Mésangère. The work, titled La Poule, depicts four figures in elegant Empire-period attire performing a movement from a quadrille dance. The print is inscribed with the title at the top center and Le Bon Genre, N° 43. in the bottom center margin. As is characteristic of this series, the work is plate-signed with these inscriptions rather than hand-signed and does not bear a limited edition number. The series is renowned for its keen observation of Parisian social life and costume during the First Empire and Bourbon Restoration. The print is presented in a blue-green mat and a distressed, green-painted wooden frame. Image size approximately 7.5 x 10 inches; Sheet size approximately 10 x 13 inches.
Condition report:
The paper exhibits significant overall toning and scattered foxing, which is most prevalent in the margins. The frame shows scuffing and wear to the painted finish. The print is housed under glass and has not been examined out of the frame.
