This collection consists of three original black and white silver gelatin photographs documenting military and humanitarian efforts in Europe between 1944 and 1947. The first photograph is a US Army Signal Corps image, reference number ETO HQ 44 25533, taken by T/5 Yalb J. Lapidus on November 10, 1944. It depicts British-American actress Madeline Carroll serving with the American Red Cross on a hospital train in the Dompaire area of France, offering cigarettes to a wounded soldier identified as 1st Lt. John Capron of Appleton, Wisconsin. The reverse features a typed caption and two purple circular SHAEF Field Press Censor stamps dated November 15, 1944. The second photograph is a Signal Corps image, reference number ETO-HQ-44-15418, documenting the liberation of Grave, Netherlands. The image shows a crowd of Dutch civilians welcoming a column of British military vehicles, identified by the reverse caption as the Guards Armored Division. The reverse includes a typed history of the town’s liberation by American paratroopers and a purple SHAEF Field Press Censor stamp dated September 23, 1944. The front of this print contains red editorial crop marks. The third photograph, dated September 1947, provides a view of ruined buildings on Hahnenstrasse in Cologne, Germany, including the storefront of Wilh. Girards and a cafe restaurant. This image was produced by German photojournalist Walter Dick. The reverse bears a blue stamp for the Nachrichtenamt der Stadt Koln, a typed paper label in German, and an embossed studio mark for Walter Dick.
