This Wilson official NFL football features two white panels for autographs and two traditional brown pebbled panels. The ball is multi-signed in black ink by numerous figures associated with Notre Dame football history. Visible signatures include 1953 Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Lattner and College Football Hall of Fame inductee Jerry Groom, who inscribed his signature with Capt 1950 Hall of Fame – 1994. The ball also features the signature of Urban Meyer with the inscription WR Coach, dating the signature to his tenure as a Notre Dame assistant coach (1996-2000). Other signers identified include former head coach Gerry Faust, Skip Holtz, Thom Gatewood (inscribed #44), Frank Tripucka, Wesley Pritchett (inscribed 34), Tommy Longo (inscribed ‘9’), Greg Mattison, Frank Stams, Tom Krug, Chuck Lanza, Jim Leahy, and Ryan Leahy. One brown panel features the gold-tone Wilson logo, a stamped NFL logo, and the printed signature of Commissioner Paul Tagliabue. The white panels are marked Wilson, Made in USA, and Inflate 13 LBS. The item is accompanied by a handwritten identification list on a yellow note.
Provenance / Authentication Note: This item originates from a single-owner collection assembled by a dedicated sports fan (with a strong focus on Notre Dame and New York Yankees memorabilia). The collector actively pursued autographs over many years through in-person events, including games, autograph shows, and visits to National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum during player events, as well as through direct mail requests to athletes and celebrities. The collection included supporting material such as handwritten correspondence sent to athletes (in some cases with payment enclosed), along with photographs of the collector with various signers. A portion of this same collection was featured in our March 21st auction, where multiple items were authenticated by James Spence Authentication (JSA). In regards to any items with signature(s): While this specific item(s) may not be individually submitted for third-party authentication, it originates from the same collection and shows consistency with previously authenticated pieces. As with many large autograph collections, there may be a small number of facsimile or clubhouse-style signatures present, but for the most part we have seen AUTHENTIC SIGNATURES within the collection. Based on the overall provenance and our review, we maintain a strong level of confidence in the authenticity of most items. Bidders are encouraged to review all photos carefully and bid according to their own level of comfort. No additional authentication documentation is included unless visible within the lot photos. Condition report:
The football is in good display condition with clear and legible signatures throughout. There is a slight smudge to the Gerry Faust signature. The ball appears to hold air and is housed in a clear acrylic display case. No third-party certificates of authenticity are present.
