An original mid-20th-century law enforcement hand restraint device known as The Iron Claw, manufactured by the Argus Manufacturing Company of Chicago, Illinois. This single-cuff come-along restraint is constructed from plated steel and features a T-handle grip and a knurled locking collar mechanism. One side of the central housing is stamped ARGUS MFG. CO. CHICAGO ILL. U.S.A. PAT. 1950757 OTHER PAT. PEND. The reverse side is stamped THE IRON CLAW 52374. The patent number 1950757 corresponds to a 1934 filing by J.J. Sullivan. This device was designed to provide a leverage-based escort restraint when applied to a single wrist. It is accompanied by a form-fitting black leather carrying pouch featuring a stitched belt loop and a metal snap closure.
Condition report:
The restraint is in good vintage condition and is mechanically functional. The plated metal finish shows visible surface pitting, oxidation, and wear to the plating on high-friction areas. The T-handle and knurled locking collar rotate as intended. The black leather pouch remains intact with surface scuffing and edge wear. The metal snap fastener on the pouch shows significant surface oxidation and corrosion but remains functional.
