BID PER WHAT YOU SEE IN THE PHOTO, NOT THE AI GENERATED TITLES AND DESCRIPTIONS! Jack Spurling (British, 1870–1933), ‘Three-Masted Sailing Ship at Sea’, (Signed)
This maritime work is executed in watercolor with opaque gouache highlights on wove paper, attributed to the renowned marine artist Jack Spurling (British, 1870–1933). The composition depicts a three-masted sailing vessel, likely a clipper ship, traversing a turbulent deep blue sea under a sky filled with horizontal clouds at dusk. The artist demonstrates a high level of technical proficiency in the rendering of the complex rigging and the translucent, wind-filled sails. The work is signed Spurling in the lower right corner. It is presented in an off-white mat and a black-finished frame featuring a narrow gold-toned inner lip.
Condition report:
The paper displays moderate overall toning and light scattered foxing, which is most evident in the upper right quadrant of the sky. As watercolors are light-sensitive, there is some expected mellowing of the pigments, though the blues and yellows remain distinct. The mat shows more prominent foxing and brown staining in the upper right corner. The frame has minor surface scuffs and a small green mark on the right rail. The artwork has not been examined out of the frame.
